What is the difference between Web Development and Web Design?

Web development and design are two distinct functions that sometimes overlap. By definition, a Web developer is more focused on the inner-workings of a website.  That is, the behind-the-scene applications that take place, such as forms, scripting, back-end database development, et cetera.

Whereas web design is mostly concerned with aesthetics, such as layout, graphics, CSS, et cetera. The question you have to ask is what kind of a website do you want? If all you require is a presence on the Internet, then a web designer can meet your requirements. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a full-blown e-Commerce site, then you definitely need a web developer.

When deciding on a Web Designer, should you hire someone "local?"

The key to hiring a web designer is not whether he or she is local, but rather determining that this person is competent and trustworthy.  Ask for samples of their work, referrences and never pay upfront before the job has been completed to your satisfaction. Normally, a professional web designer will ask for a deposit in order to cover expenses; that's fine, but never pay the full amount untill you are satisfied with the work.

How long does it take to have a web site designed?

It depends on the size, scope and complexity of the project. Typically, a basic design consisting of one or two pages should not take more than one business week. Keep in mind that a "basic" design is one that does not involve web development, i.e. database implementation, scripting, forms, et cetera.

What is a URL?

URL stands for Universal Resource Locator. It is nothing more than the specific webpage that you type at the top of your web browser. As an example, "http://www.bluerincon.com/index.html" points to a specific webpage. Often the "index.html" is omitted when typing the URL; however, your web browser automatically looks for the main page of that website, which is usually "index.html." However, it can be any name as long as it is designated the main page of that website.

What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is a unique, registered name of your website. No two websites can have the same domain name. As an example, "myweb.com" is a domain name.

What does it cost to register a Domain Name?

It varies. Over the years the cost to register a domain name has dropped significantly.

Do I have to renew a Domain Name?

Yes, Domain Names have to be renewed. At the very least, a domain name has to be renewed every year. However, the renewal can be in lengths of multiple years, such as every five years.

What is Web Hosting?

Web hosting is where the pages that make up your website physically resides. Typically, a web hosting company will have a myriad of servers whose only function is to store the web pages of its respective websites and provide those pages when a web browser makes a URL request.

Is there a fee associated with Web Hosting?

Yes. Fees vary depending on what kind of services you require in order to maintain your website. A basic website does not require any additional services other than hosting the site. Therefore, a nominal monthly fee is charged.
